Drill-Down Protocol
How The Bell Brief decides what is worth a dental professional's time — and what is noise.
Drill-Down Score
The Drill-Down Protocol produces a weighted 1–10 Drill-Down Score. It blends urgency, recency, source quality, and relevance to your role. Labels such as CRITICAL or HIGH are the human-readable form of that score on cards and story pages.
Urgency labels
- 9–10CRITICAL — Could change legality, license risk, or business viability soon — major regulation, lawsuits, large M&A.
- 7–8HIGH — Independent, actionable strategy or serious clinical guidance worth acting on this week.
- 5–6MEDIUM / NOTABLE — Solid professional development, regional updates, or still-relevant older high scores after time decay.
- 1–4BACKGROUND — Low signal, ads, fluff, or patient-facing tips. These rarely make the main brief.
Older stories may show a softer score so the brief stays focused on what is still timely. CRITICAL does not linger indefinitely on the homepage.
Why it matters for dental
Most industry “news” is marketing, press releases, or generic tips aimed at patients. The brief asks a narrower question: does this affect a dentist's license, business, or clinical care? The “Why it matters for dental” line on each story is that framed answer — not a restatement of the headline.
Key points vs. summary
When scoring produces structured facts, story pages show a separate Key points list. Those bullets are distinct from the summary: concrete numbers, deadlines, parties, or actions — not a re-split of “Why it matters.” If key points would only echo the summary, they are omitted.
Signal vs. noise
Promotional and low-value items receive low scores and stay off the main brief. In practice that means filtering out:
- Press releases that read like advertisements
- Sponsored content dressed up as news
- Consumer or social tips aimed at patients, not clinicians
Attribution honesty
Every story credits the original publisher and links out. Summary and scoring belong to The Bell Brief (Dr. Jennifer Bell) under the Drill-Down Protocol — not to the outlet that reported the news. We do not republish full articles or paywalled text. Always verify with the source before acting on legal, regulatory, or clinical detail.

Owner and DSO tags emphasize business and regulatory risk; Associate and Specialist lean clinical and employment; Staff and Student surface workforce and training context.
